Preview to Monaco’s most glamorous star-studded gala for the Ocean

Final preparations are being made ahead of the Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean in September, now considered one of the most glamorous, most memorable charity events in the world. Organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the star-studded gala offers guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience in exchange for an opportunity to support initiatives to save the Ocean.

Created in 2017, the gala instantly attracted a dizzying array of environmentally-minded celebrities including Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Grant, Joe Pesci, Martin Scorsese, Robert F. Kennedy Jr and Orlando Bloom, to name but a few.

This year, on 26th September, guests will gather at the most exquisite setting in the Principality, the Terraces of the Opera of Monaco. The red carpet evening will include entertainment by internationally renowned artists, still to be revealed, and feature an exceptional auction which will raise money for the Foundation’s worldwide initiatives dedicated to a sustainable Ocean.

This year, those projects will focus on eight priority initiatives: fighting against plastic pollution, developing the Mediterranean Trust Fund for Marine Protected Areas, conserving marine species facing a risk of extinction, expanding marine protected areas in the Polar Regions, mitigating the ocean’s acidification, supporting innovations to challenge marine threats, sustainable yacht practices and promoting environmental education.

Close to four million euros has already been raised for multi-annual projects selected by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Investments have been made in the protection of the biodiversity of our oceans, in studying the impact of climate change on the oceans, in management tools that preserve marine ecosystems, and two specific programmes that combat plastic pollution.

Representing more than 70% of the planet’s surface and 97% of the biosphere, the global Ocean plays a key role in climate regulation, producing 50% of the oxygen we breathe and absorbing 25% of the carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. The Monte-Carlo Gala aims at meeting the challenge of a preserved Ocean, for the next generations and for our planet’s future.
