Macron’s candidate leads in Monaco

Monaco’s French community has overwhelmingly backed the centrist candidate in the first round of legislative elections held on Sunday, June 4.

Only 15 percent of eligible voters turned out to elect a deputy for the fifth district, which includes the French residents of Andorra, Spain, Portugal and the Principality of Monaco.

Samantha Cazebonne, the representative of La République en Marche won 42.9 percent of the vote in Monaco. The candidate for centre-right Les Republicains, Laurence Sailliet, took 34.5 percent of the vote. The National Front candidate, Natacha Barral, won 12.46 percent, while the Socialists took just 2.83 percent. There were 14 candidates in all.

The second round of voting, between the two front-runners, takes place on Sunday, June 18.
