After more than 10 days of a wildly successful run, Monaco’s temporary 3×3 basketball court saw its last dribbles, shots, and points scored on Wednesday.
The courts, which were set up in conjunction with AS Monaco Basket, French Riviera 3×3 and Monaco’s town hall, gave fans a chance to try out this popular new form of the classic game, and gave spectators the thrill of watching this fast-paced sport in action.
Each team consists of three players, plus a substitute. It is played on a half-court and only one hoop is used. Each game consists of a single period lasting 10 minutes, with sudden death at 21 points. The first team to score 21 points or the team with the most points at the end of the 10 minute period wins. Players are given only 12 seconds to make shots.
A tournament was held last Saturday, with teams from all across the region participating, including one from Monaco. In the end, the France U23 team were the victors, but everyone who played had a ball!
The sport has gained such a following that it will be debuted as an Olympic event at the 2020 summer games in Tokyo.
