Monaco fans were hugely disappointed on Wednesday night, after the 2-0 loss to Juventus at home in Stade Louis II in the first leg of a semi-final game in the UEFA Champions League.

Monaco’s much vaunted defence failed to stop Higuan scoring the opening goal in the 29th minute. Higuan scored again in the 59th, before being replaced in the 76th minute by Cuadrado, losing the chance of a hat trick. Monaco made more shots at goal than the visitors, but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Germain almost scored a goal in the 90th minute from a free kick, but Buffon, the brilliant Juventus goalie, got his fingers to the high ball which slid over the bar. Monaco had lost its last chance of scoring and a consolation prize.

The two teams will meet again in six days, on May 9, for the second leg. But with Juventus having two away goals to its credit, Monaco may have to comfort themselves with taking first place in France’s Ligue 1, despite having what has been described as the most potent attack in Europe, certainly measured in goals. But it means a great deal in Monaco to finish ahead of arch-rivals PSG.
