The Monaco Legend Group and Antiquorum have sold a Patek Philippe watch for a sum close to its pre-sale estimate of €1.15 million to an unidentified Asian buyer after a battle between three interested parties bidding by telephone.

The seller was also not identified, but the timepiece was alleged to have been owned by Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin.

The watch had been bought at a shop in London in December 2015 and registered to the Russian leader, although the Kremlin later denied the president had been the owner.

Christies sold a Patek Philippe watch that belonged to Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie for €2.49 million in May this year.
